Reflection and Action: example task

Purpose of task

To stimulate initial thinking on the shape and structure of your research journey. [This task is best done with your peer group or at least with your supervisor(s)]

1. Create a simple mind map of the possible key issues in your proposed research. Information on mind maps can be found in ‘The Mind Map Book’ (Buzan, 1998 - a good example is on page 65)

2. Interrogate your map asking the following:

• what? possible research questions

• why? research rationale and research context

• how? possible methodology and methods

• so what? possible outcomes

3. Write the various responses to each question on post-it notes and stick on the wall. The notes can be grouped and re-organised in different ways to help shape and structure your project.
